The Free South, an anti-slavery newspaper in Newport, Kentucky, had its offices attacked numerous times in the 1850's. Despite this, Bailey, the editor, continued to publish the weekly paper through the aid of supporters in New York and Boston. On January 11, 1865, Bailey wrote William Bourne, a journalist, author and editor, in New York, “this week I cannot issue a paper for the want of funds…”
