Many soldiers wrote home to loved ones to complain that they had not heard from them, Edwin wrote, “Are you all dead or only sleeping slothful neglent? ...I sent that money to father to buy a cow with, and felt anxious to know if he had bought one, and then I want to know if there is anybody alive and stirring there what the news may be. Do write for God’s sake a long letter soon and tell me all the news.”
